3 riders from Hermitage, PA went down to Wellsville, OH for a day of riding. Bill Smith and his wife went down too, partly for the ride and to observe the riders.

They thought nothing of going on the back dirt roads until they started down one road that Bill found he could not come back up. They continued on, hoping to get out the other end, but the road just got worse. Everything came to a halt when they broke though ice covering a sink hole.

They found themselves stuck up to the running boards in ice and water, miles from anywhere. Their only hope was to find their son and friends and hope that the big Sportsman 800 their son was riding could help. Bill was pretty sure a tow truck was out of the question.

Not able to reach them by cell phone, Bill left a message on their son’s cell phone hoping he would get the message before leaving the area. Bill then climbed back up to the top of the mountain and waited. Hearing ATV’s off in the distance Bill was pretty sure he recognized the tone of the twin exhausts on the big Sportsman. In a couple of minutes Doug and his friends came over the hill. Not knowing that his dad and mom were even there, Doug’s first words were “what are you doing here?” Bill simply answered “We’re stuck”.

Bill knew he had two problems. One was getting out of the hole and the second was getting back up the hill that he could not get up before by himself. The pictures tell the rest of the story.

Bill thanks everyone that helped and is convinced that only that big Sportsman could have got them out that day.
